Rise Up

Mark 5:21-23, 35, 41-42

21When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old).

In the region of Capernaum, Jesus had come from the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. When he reached Capernaum, a lot of people were gathered to see him. When the multitude of people gathered around, there came a man named Jairus; He was a Jewish religious leader. Normally, religious leaders were highly respected, and they held high political power within the region. But most of them didn’t get along well with Jesus. But despite the tension between them, we see a man as powerful and influential as Jarius showing such humility and faith in Jesus.

And why? Because Jairus had seen Jesus doing miracles, healing people, and her only 12-year-old child was dying. People may deny the existence of God, his power and authority; but they won’t deny it after seeing the works of his hands. In the times of the Apostles, many people used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade, where the Apostles performed signs and wonders. The Bible says afterwards: “ 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.” We often pray that many people come to know the Lord; we preach, sing, and do what we can. But it’s time to pray as the Apostles prayed and say: “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” They might deny what we say, but they will be eyewitnesses to what only the Lord can do.

Our God is strong and mighty, and more powerful than all gods. The psalmist said it so well: “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel; feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throat. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”

So who is great like Our God? None compares to him; none is stronger than him; he is the great and mighty king able to do what no man or other God can do!

Now back to Jairus, while Jesus was still standing, someone came to him and said: “Don’t bother the teacher anymore; your child is dead.” Now, I guess the person who said that didn’t know that Jesus could raise the dead, or he had little faith. But Jesus is good; he didn’t bother with him, but he went to Jairus’ house, grabbed her hand and said, “Talitha Koum”, which means “little girl, rise” The girl rose, and they prepared food for her, and she ate.

Are you trapped in a situation where you feel like it’s dead, it’s over, there’s nothing left to do? Jesus is saying, “Rise, get up” In Jesus’ name “let the dead rise and may the spirit of God bring life again.” All you need is faith and walking in his instructions; the bible says: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord ”. God is able to refresh and redeem the years the locusts have eaten. Just have faith and walk in him.
